The old form editor was needed because in the old days, there was no layout manager in the UI so controls had to be given an exact position on a form. Fine-tuning this manually would have been tedious. However, there were still problems, for example the layout that worked fine on one resolution or OS may not have worked on another. I remember spending a great deal of time on manually fixing up form editor output so forms worked properly everywhere.
However, Qt has a nice layout manager. Control positioning is easy and just works in all platforms.
