Here's what I have read about the M1:

(*) It's an ARM variant, so you can run virtualized ARM linux on it.
To run Intel linux on it you need to use an emulator (so, lower speed
-- I have read that qemu/acvm currently works on m1, with vmware and
virtual box people planning on releasing support when they're happy
with their implementation).

(*) There's also at least one project to create an M1 specific linux
port (asashi linux),

Docker supports the arm architecture and also supports qemu, vmware
and virtual box, though it looks like they might still be working
through some issues, and qemu apparently sometimes runs into problems.
https://docs.docker.com/desktop/mac/apple-silicon/

Anyways, like any new platform, there will probably be some issues to
work through, but people who have the time and energy to burn, to help
work through those will also be gradually building some expertise with
the platform (and occasionally, be surprised by some of the eventual
changes or other issues).

I hope this helps,
