Yes, it's sort of like training wheels on a bicycle. Handy for the
beginner, maybe, but would get in the way of other uses.

That said, most of it could be achieved using the ability to update an
existing plot window. I haven't tried messing with that aspect of
plot, recently. I should do some experiments before saying anything
further.
