I guess there's not a 'universal rule'. >From my experience in OpenBSD (and slighty in CentOS), unix sockets are far better in terms of performance than TCP if you're playing with MySQL :) The tests of Silvio are awesome. I think the key is to make tests and fix anything we find that isn't working properly.
