You're right. I don't remember the exact problem, though. I just
automatically configured the ldconfig stuff because something similar
happened to me with OpenBSD, and it fixed it.

Now I realize the problem of Ashvin was with libcherokee-base.so.0, that
it's installed in $PREFIX/lib.
