It happens all the time, especially on the more popular items. The sellers
bid against themselves to see how high they can raise the price. Then if
nobody outbids them, they contact the highest "real" bidder privately with
some story about how the buyer backed out, and they offer it to that person
at their last bid. This is a very effective way to jack up the final selling
price.

I just started using Ebay. However, I have a suspicion
that some sellers assume an identity as a buyer and
bid against their own item thus attempting to raise
the
price. Anyone else here have that thought or am I just
paranoid ?
