With strait cut cam gears this is not as much (or any) front or back push of the cam.  With angled gears as the teeth mesh and push off each other there is a tendency for the gear or the idler wheels to deflect against the timing cover.

As to the sound; sinister.  When my younger brother and I were at car shows we would hear the whine coming down the street.  We dropped everything and headed chase until the car parked to see if there was a blower under the hood or if it was the cam drive.  Mmm Mmm Mmmm.  This is, of course, my opinion...

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Water Pump

Thanks everyone.  I found a set of short valve covers online that have an angled rear one one of them so that the booster will not be an issue.  As for the water pump.  There is a space between the water pump and the timing chain cover, so..as the idea goes, it ia a long neck pump.  Thanks for the help....BTW what opinion, if any, do ya'll have about the gear systems that replace the timing chain?  Good...Bad....Loud??  I hear there is a loud whine that comes with installing them, especially at high revs.
