The engines actually displaced 402 cubic inches but the "SS396" was such a recognizable name, GM kept it.  The 402 came in to being in late '69 I think replacing the ~real~ 396 cubic inch engine.

was there a 396 produced in 71 and 72?  i just passed a 72 chevelle that looked like a SS and it said SS 396?  i thought the only things they produced for SS were 350's and 454s?  correct me please.
