Around '68 or '69 the damper changed from having the keyway 2 degrees offset from the timing mark to 10 degrees offset but I can't remember which direction. Depending on the originality of your engine the damper could be mismatched to the timing scale; as Keith suggested you definitely want to index the timing mark to see where TDC really is.
