[Chevelle-List] Matching Numbers?

I am fairly new to the classic car world. I just bought my first Chevelle last month and enjoy it immensely! However, people often talk about how a car’s numbers should all match to make it more valuable. I do know that each car has a VIN and engine numbers and transmission numbers. Is there some book to access that will tell me if these numbers match? And where would I find such a book?   Any help would be greatly appreciated!   Scott
