Maybe your "nice to have" parts you priced at Summit/Jegs/etc at "Racer's Net"  and he priced them at retail.  That's about a 30%-40% markup.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] OUCH! Estimate on engine wasn't close!

Guys,
I put my engine in to the local speed shop last February. I get notified it's ready recently. I asked for a total and got my answer today. I about fell on the floor. The original estimate was $1,800 to rebuild the 396/402. I added some "nice to have" parts that total couldn't have came over $1,000. I get the total from the guy at a little over $4,000 !!!   OUCH !!!

So far all recent communications have been by e-mail. I asked him tonight in an e-mail to justify that as it was way over the estimate.

Has this happened to anyone else?
