Sarge,

I have the same manual and I never noticed that before, but there it is!  Yes, this 5-digit code is the first 5 numbers of the VIN.  But it doesn’t list a different number for a ’69 SS convertible, wonder why?  We all should keep in mind that Chevrolet probably didn’t keep very good records back then.

Well, it finally worked, I hope it shows up properly for ya'll.

To my knowledge, this 5 digit code is the first 5 numbers of the VIN.  The service manual also lists the 1969 model numbers for '69 Chevrolet, '69 Nova, '69 Camaro, & '69 Corvette.  I highly recommend this manual for everyone.  I have used the heck out of it.

I hope this helps ya'll out.  Again, maybe I'm reading this wrong, if so, please correct me.  I'm trusting in the Chevrolet Manual for now, but I'm still open minded to any other inputs.

Scott, Sorry to say that according to Chevy's manual, you car is the same as mine, a Malibu 2 Door Sport Coupe.  Again, don't take this as the FINAL answer.  If the guys/gals in here have further info, I'm sure they can add to this.  As far as a theory to why it was sold as an SS, I'm stumped.
