It's getting hyped because of a cryptic message in the code bashing "Billy Gates" for releasing such buggy software. It's designed as a denial of service attack against the Microsoft update site. If the hacker was so concerned, why not submit to MS the vulnerabililty instead of expoiting it and ruining things for the consumers?

Probably because some people just have too much free time on their hands and want to see what kind of havoc they can reak on the general public instead of putting their talents to good use I suppose.
