I don't think it actually gives you any more oil at the top of the motor because the additional oil you had to add is in the filter....

A deep sump oil pan allows you to add more oil that is available for use during a hard run (because it's common for the oil pump to pump faster than the oil can return to the pan).  A larger filter just means more oil in the filter.   Now, an advantage of a larger filter is that it'll last longer (more filter surface area to use up), and you will have more oil in the system, which give more oil for the contaminents to contamine, and more oil to break down (lasts a bit longer).

I also use the taller PF35  (now PF 1218).
