China has bought, dismantled, and shipped to China 5 American steel mills that have shut down over the last few years. The number may be greater, but I personally know of 5. I own a welding company and the same steel I bought in December for .19 a pound is now costing me .50 or more depending on the specific shape/size. Tube has jumped even more. The prices have leveled off over the past month, but no relief is in sight. The Chinese are also buying all the scrap they can get. I live in KY, nowhere near a shipping port, and they have caused scrap prices to quadruple this year. No one in the industry that I have spoken to seems to be able to offer much explanation at all. Makes you wonder.
