One Tooth Off... Yes that would advance or retard your timing but unless the dist can has interference with something. You  still should be able to
set the timing correct... If it's POPPING and your timing is set right.( timing light off  #1 plug  and flashing on your timing mark on the  damper/tab).
.. I would  first start looking over my firing order making sure there right...
out he 180 degree thing still my come into play here also..Because the timing marks line up  but your 180deg 'OUT
A sure way to check that is pull the valve cover ,watch your #1
exhaust rocker depress and then your intake rocker depress, while you turn the crank by hand clock wise ,your now completing the compression stroke and as the mark on the damper hits the timing tab,. Your Now  @ Top Dead
Center. and can set your Dist from this point..

sounds like it might be one tooth off of the dist.

Help! I had an HEI put in my 65 by Shade Tree Inc. at first it had one Pop through the carb, then another, then it got so bad I can not drive it and had it towed. If I cover the secondary with my hand (risking fire) and through it wide open it will not back fire. I pulled the manifold and replaced the new gaskets, and the carb gaskets. I guess I will put the old point distributor in next, what the Chevelle Hell is going on with my Baby? Who out there has gone through this, and what did you do? Mahalo from Maui, Mark
