Since someone brought up coilovers I
figured I would ask this question. I have a 70 SS with a 454. I have bought new
springs for front and back. I wanted to raise the ass end of the car up maybe an
inch or two. But I dont want to put air shocks on it. Should I put some coilover
shocks on it? Would they raise it an inch or two?Any suggestions? I dont have
the frame painted and back together yet so I dont know what the stock springs
will do. I did buy big block springs for the front and heavy duty
rear.
Thanks Matt

Coilovers
Thanks for your input Brad. I'd love to see what
your 67 looks like with that tires/rims combo. You have any pics on the web?
For that matter, anybody else on the list have pics on the web of 66/67
Chevelles with non-stock tires/rims combinations?
Thanks,
Larry

Coilovers
Like Clint said, making it handle better is really
easy. A good quality set of shocks will make a huge difference, as
will modern rubber. I have the Global West setup with really wide
(275/40/17 tires) and it is stiff and likely out-handles your old
3000GT. You could use the air bags to get an adjustable ride height
and find reasonable tires and some great shocks. Or, try it with the
current springs, Koni or Bilstein shocks, and see what you think. If
you don't plan to push the car really hard, then you can save a lot by
keeping the stock A-arms and brakes, and just using moderate tires/wheels
(maybe 16x8 with 245/50/16 tires?). If you like a lower stance, or low
profile tires, then that will dictate other choices. TireRack.com has
lots of tires specs where you can see the diameter of the tire and see if
this is close enough to what you want.
I have found that modern shocks make a huge
difference, with tires coming in next in importance, then everything
else.

Ultimately, what I'm looking to do is build a
safe, fun to drive car that handles somewhat better than what the car did
when originally produced. I don't expect it to handle the way my 3000GT
did when I owned one, but I'm hoping to put something together that
handles better than the "boats" I used to drive in the 70's. - without
breaking the bank. Tall order?
This car will basically be a (sunny) weekend
driver...

Coilovers
If you run the GW arms and QA1 coilover
front set-up,it will also be very firm. Prices aren't
cheap, either, around $1500 for the package. For that kind of money, you
could run Pole Position a-arms,Coil Spring Specialties springs, and some
Tokico or Koni shocks. You wouldn't have the adjustable ride height but
the car would handle just as well & probably ride better. Another
option that would cost about the same as the GW arms/QA1 coilovers would
be Air Ride Shockwaves and StrongArm a-arms. Lots of ways to go for
different budgets. It all depends on what you plan to do with your
car.

My 66SS project car is very stiff in the
front and VERY soft in the rear. I'm guessing the front is very stiff
and high because the big block and tranny is out. There's currently no
shocks mounted anywhere. Can someone educate me on the advantages of
coilovers over the stock setup, and what it might cost
me?
Thanks,
Larry
