So,to compare apples to apples,you can't put an M22
in there for just $1400.

It was originally a 4 speed car, but I bought a
basket case, and I didn't get a tranny, bell housing, flywheel or clutch. I
did get a driveshaft, but I have no idea if it's for a manual tranny or an
automatic. I did get several sets of pedals... and the shifter hole
disappeared when the new floor went in.. Apparently this car has spent some
time as an automatic. I did get a manual floor shift column and gauge cluster
though...

Isn't your Chevelle a manual trans car? If
so,why do you need a new driveshaft,pilot bearing,trans
mount,flywheel,etc?
My D&D Performance Viper T56 cost me
$2645,delivered. That was just the transmission and shifter. Total cost of
parts not including labor, was less than $3,000.

I was just looking at www.classicchevy5speed.com 's
elite kit. I basically need everything flywheel and back, so this kit
would seem to do the trick, but the price of $3800+ is a bit hard to
swallow. Can I get a better deal someplace else?

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Muncie
4 Speeds
A TKO would be stronger, shift more
smoothly, and be a lot quieter than an M22 Muncie. The OD 5th would
allow you to gear the car for the best performance AND mileage. My 69 El
Camino w/6spd is turning 2,000 rpm at 70mph,with 4.11 cogs. In 4th
gear, which has a 1:1 ratio just like the M22, 70mph would equate to
4,000 rpm.

Clint,
Give me the pros and cons, besides the
obvious 5th gear.
Thanks,

I would spend another hundred dollars
or so and buy a Tremec TKO-500 5spd.

I need to pick up a 4 speed Muncie
tranny for my 66 SS396 in the next couple of months. The boss of
the guy doing my paint has a rock crusher M22 available for $1400.
Talking to my machine shop guy, he is expecting my 396 to produce
400 to 425 horsepower when I put it together.
Based on my expected output, is an
M22 a good choice, or should I save the money and get myself an
M20 or M21?
And Gene, when I order the harness
from you, what will be the expected lead time?
Thanks,
Larry
