A 9" has a larger ring gear than a 12 bolt, 9" vs. 8.875, not much difference. The big advantage to the 9" is that you can change the ring and pinion as a single unit, making gear changes at the track or at home very simple. The 9" takes more power to turn than a 12 bolt (parasitic loss). They are great rears, but I would not put a F*** part under my Chevy!!! Curry or one of the aftermarket mfrs. now offers a 12 bolt with the quick change setup.

What makes a Ford 9" so bullet proof? Is it better than a 12 bolt? It must
have some advantage?

Hi,

I've had spider gears blow apart, ring gears shear teeth off, pinion gears
shear teeth off. The internals simply can't handle the torque a high
performance engine will produce. Granted aftermarket parts will help
increase the strength, but nothing can replace what a 12 bolt will handle.
For what it costs to buy all the parts and have someone build you a rear,
you can buy a 12 bolt ready to go in a car.
