The 46 Chevy truck I bought has a 700R4 trany in it, that just bit the big
one. They put another 700R4 and it just died as well Sunday. Smoke was
pouring out the back. 

I'm curious to know any info about the 700 R4 trany you might have or any
sights that give detailed info on it. It's hooked up to a LT1 1996 Camaro
Engine with the Aluminum heads. For riding around it seem like a good trany
to use, but the first one went out because the builder had a cooling
radiator under the bed where little cooling could take place! I bought a
large B&M Super Cooler trany radiator with fan which is mounted in the lower
front grill. I know it's overkill, but better safe than sorry. I also bought
the large B&M aluminum finned pan which holds three extra quarts of oil to
help cool the trany. 

Well, got it out of the shop, and yesterday took it for a spin. It drove so
good! For a while I was a happy camper until the trany puked on the return
home!  This morning the trany is slipping and now it has no reverse. They
will replace the trany with another 700R4.

The trany is the manual 700 R4 without electronics. I'm wondering if it's
better to spend the bucks and upgrade to the electronic version. I was told
by Nick at Street & Performance that the older model 700 R4 was a stouter
trany. Any opinions? Should I try something else, assuming it adapts?

The trany is from Jasper. Until now I knew nothing about them, but was told
they were a large supplier and had a good reputation. I was planning on
going with Phoenix, TCI or someone else, but the mechanic was behind the
Jasper trany and said they have a great warranty! Any opinion about Jasper?
