I took a good look at it and it seemed like the easiest thing to do would probably be to take the fender & inner fender off as a unit and then have easy access to everything. Only problem w/ that is that it's much easier to get the hood off & on again w/ a second pair of hands. Also, it might be a bit much for a curbside repair. Maybe I'll try to get a much earlier start and do it tomorrow.

Also, you do have to pull the nose apart to do the heater core. There are 4 bolts that go from the heater box forward through the firewall, with nuts on the other side. One of those nuts is behind the inner fender.

For now I left the glovebox apart and I have all the inner bolts out. Hopefully I'll get up the courage to do it tomorrow.

John,
You can address the heater core from the inside. Only thing you have
to do on the outside is disconnect the hoses. The fan is a different
story. It's not just the bottom bolt. The fan motor has a squirrel cage
fan attached to it so it must be backed out of the housing about 4- 5
inches after you have removed the screws. You don't have to remove the
outside box for either replacement. But the inner fender has to be
unbolted so you can pull it forward for the fan.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] 1969 heater core / blower motor

Looking for somebody to refresh my memory...

On a 1969 El Camino, does replacing the heater core only involve removing stuff inside the cabin?

Also, to replace the blower motor, is it just that one stupid bolt on the bottom of the cover that makes you have to get the inner fender out of the way? Also, does the inside stuff have to be torn down to get at that? Has anybody had success w/ just dropping the back half of the inner fender and reaching in there?

I have gone three winters now with my heater core bypassed and a non-working blower motor. I'm thinking I should take advantage of the long weekend (and it's not supposed to rain) to fix this.

Thanks. I'll probably be digging into this today. Maybe three winters is enough procrastination, esp. since I have the parts sitting here.
