YOu can do an oil pan gasket on a 454 without pulling the engine completly out, I've done it on my 70. You will, however, have to lift it up about 6 inches or so which means disconnecting the transmission so you might as well just pull the engine and reseal the whole thing. Do yourself a favor and get a 1 piece oil pan gasket from Fel Pro to replace it. They are around $25-$30 and well worth it.
