YOu can do an oil pan gasket on a 454 without pulling the engine completly out,
I've done it on my 70. You will, however, have to lift it up about 6 inches or
so which means disconnecting the transmission so you might as well just pull
the engine and reseal the whole thing. Do yourself a favor and get a 1 piece
oil pan gasket from Fel Pro to replace it. They are around $25-$30 and well
worth it.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Oil Pan Gasket Leak

I noticed a small leak on the bottom of my oil pan this week. Car is a '70 SS
454. Tightened the bolts but still leaking and I can see parts of the gasket
sticking out suggesting it is broken. Leak appears to be coming from the rear
of the engine dripping down the flywheel cover plate.

What is the easiest way to replace the gasket?

Any way to fix this without pulling the engine?

  Thanks,
  Jerry Wells
