Hullo Dan, Malibu and Others, You are correct, The present linkage is a rod. See my second e-mail with the photo. I have a 250CID with TH350 trannie as the original 230 CID engine and 2spd Powerglide box was removed in 1982 and replaced with a 1970 Chev engine and box. The propshaft front universal knocked against the transmission tunnel causing the owner to put it in the Barn for 21years and after his passing away, his children put it on rocks under a pine tree for 5 years! Talk about Hillbillies! All I had to do was to change the box mounting and fit the correct 3spd shifter! And the big clean-up!

Does the trans shift at the slightest throttle. If so, it sounds like you may have bad modulator. If the modulator is bad the trans may think it's at speed and shift. If it shifts late, you may have a sticking governor.
