The 700R4 shifting issues depend on what shifter you plan on using. When I put a 700R4 in place of the 4-speed in my old 67 I used a B&M Quicksilver ratchet shifter and had a bracket made to position the shift handle to come through the 4-speed's original location. I'd already had a custom console built with the 4-speed location retained and didn't want to modify the entire console to accommodate a different location.
If you're going to use a stock-type TH400 console, Shiftworks.com has a replacement shifter for TH350/TH400 that eliminates the rod linkage in favor of a cable. That might just work for a 700R4 as well; might not be able to get to low gear manually due to the detents and stops but that's not clear on the website. Kind of confusing on their site but they also show the console lens with (what looks like) "P R N O D L2 L1" for 66/67 consoles so maybe their conversion kit does work on O/D transmissions. Convenience of the cable is the shifter bolts to the floor as normal and the cable only requires a small hole forward of the shifter instead of large hole on the side of the tunnel for mechanical rod linkage. I don't have specific measurements for the cable's hole but as long as the cable has a pretty straight forward shot from the shifter, it should still be well within the confines of the console. I'd guess it's even part of their instruction sheet. I've heard the 700R4 swap may require some additional clearance at the rear with the floorboard. I had mine installed at Phoenix Transmissions in Weatherford, TX. and they said the same thing. They had found though that if the body mounts were in good shape and/or recently replaced, they didn't find this an issue. Biggest problems they had run into was with old, compressed mounts allowing the body to settle more on the frame thereby causing the clearance issue. I also had to have the 4-speed driveshaft shortened but Phoenix Trans took care of that as well. The only other issue I can think of is trans cooling. Either a radiator with integral cooling or an external cooler is needed. Hope some of this helps and good luck on your project!
