I should try the brush-on stuff. So far I have been using sprays and the hold doesn't last.

With contact cement you have to coat both of the surfaces that are being bonded to each other. I assume when you say the "good side" you are referring to the side that shows, which of course you don't want glue on. You do want to put to glue on the cardboard panel as well as the back of the fabric though.
