No, there is a better option than running Smita and i know that its easier said than done that Himanshuji and other Friends who have shown such a brave heart should try to carry it forward or talk to naxals but that is what they need to do.
And if running is any option then like forrest gump it will eventually lead to a big achievement and here that running should and as is towards ones land and making the naxal movement pause and look inwards as well!

Human Shield at Nendra retreated owing to Maoist threats

Dear Himanshuji,

We are all deeply disturbed to learn that the Maoists have threatened
VCA and prevented your peaceful work for the basic human rights and
survival of the tribal people in Dantewara. It is extremely
demoralizing to learn that the people of Nendra do not have a human
shield today. I really just don't know what to say. We tried to call
you but could not get through. We will try again. We did talk to some
others in Hyderabad to try to think of something we could do in time
from so far away, but alas we came up short. We are awed by your
courage, and that of the Human Shield volunteers, and pray for the
villagers of Nendra.

In Solidarity,

Dear friends,

I don't like to give in to fear.
I want to support the human shield experiment in Nendra.
I can say I condemn the Naxals and support VCA.

And then?

The people who have to be there may be killed. If I say, hang on, then
I find my behaviour the same as Naxals, who treat human beings as
fodder for the movement.

I am wondering what someone who has an experience of providing
support, and taking up issues- would do in this situation.

Some one like Sandeep ji. ( Sandeep Pandey)
He comes across as someone who can see the crux of the matter and find
a way - how would he register his opposition to the Naxals? Something
that could actually get the Nendra threat out of the way, or at least
not leave those people completely abandoned now.

Maybe look for some action with the Police and civil society. Not the
locals. But people from outside?

Naxals don't talk to anyone. They can reach you, you cannot reach
them. They may introspect- but I have to see it happen- at least once
to have any hope.

The very fact that I need to take permission from the Naxals to go
into certain parts of India is ridiculous. But I do it, because if I
were to be killed by some one who does not know me, while I am there,
it might at best get an apology from the Naxals. That is what they do
when the blow up people "inadvertently" by their land mine.

(The rest of the world might even say- this was a result of supporting
the Naxals. I am not Hanuman that I can show what is in my heart. )

What of those people in Errabore whose hands and feet were tied before
the Naxals killed them? What of the times they hack people up because
they were informers? I really cannot appreciate this "logic". A person
who does not want to be Naxal supporter must die?

I would like to hear from other activists who condemn Naxal oppression
in Nendra. Why are we not planning something more active in terms of
support to the Nendra Human Shield? We met up so many times about
Salwa Judum. But never once over Naxal violence. At least I have not
heard of any meeting like that.

Sometimes I feel that that very crude phrase- aur kisi pe bas chala
nahin- gadhiya ke kaan umeth diye, applies to us. We just try pressure
on the people we have hope from, and let the bullies go on.

Sorry for all the negativity.

Sometimes when I hear all the accusations of people being Maoist
supporters on the group, I feel hopeful- maybe some people here are
listening.

I don't see the Naxals listening to any thing.
They also want the industry to be set up.
So that they can get bigger money into the kitty.

They also want some area to be vacated by the tribals. And Nendra must
be one of those.

After all they are now looting mobile phones, cameras- they also need
the latest toys.

I don't think Naxals are talking to Himanshu ji- that is not what I
understand, so who can he talk to?

Smita

Re-Human Shield at Nendra retreated owing to Maoist threats

This is really a disappointing situation. Maoist action is enough to prove
that Adivasi's blood has no value for them. We can't see any hope for peace
in such situation. Being a community of Human rights activist, we strongly
condemn any kind of violence, including perpetraded by Naxalites. The
valiant effort took by Human shield volunteers at Nendra raised the hope
that non-violence and *satyagrah *will ensure victory of poor and
marginalised adivasi. But, unmindful action of Maoist has proved us wrong.
They should come forward and give explaination for their misdeed. What they
will gain out of it?
This incident has strongly demostrate that Adivasi in Bastar have been
constantly facing the ire of state and naxal violence. Atleast, now govt
should trust the innocent adivasi, those who want to rebuild their life in
the villages and bravely stand against the violence. It is the need of the
hour that govt should provide them adequate security and means of livelihood
to regain normalcy without using the malacious tactics of terror through
salwa judum and terrible ghetoisation of relief camp.

Dear Friends

Are Maoists and Bajrang Dal the same beneath different coloured coats?

Himanshu, all honour to your human shield volunteers, whether you stay in place or retreat for now.

If the Maoists harm these volunteers, they prove that all they believe in is violence, and that they are no different from the Hindutva forces, but at one with them in tearing the country apart through a belief in violence, orchestrating a contagion of divisiveness through fear.

I don't agree with Smita that we should give in to this fear.
This is the age of the war on terror that uses terror as the prime weapon.
In this terrorists and anti-terrorists are identical, except that the anti-terrorists' fire-power is far greater.
We must not allow the fear to consume us and dictate to us.
We must learn to support each other through huge challenges, and to support initiatives that move out against the fear and oppression.

In Orissa, what has the Maoists' killing of Swami Lakshmanand achieved?
A good excuse for the Hindutva forces to spread a horrendous violence beyond our worst fears.

Everyone should support the human shield volunteers' experiment in a return to peace and non-violence, The people of Bastar are desparate for peace and they deserve peace now. Give peace a chance.

look for something out of the box

What support can be offered to anyone against the Naxals by people on the
group?

We can make requests to the police and the government again.
And they will say that Salwa Judum was working, and that was opposed. Then
some people will say the Naxals are this way because of something that
happened 30 or 40 or 50 years back.

It is just too convoluted a situation.

Ultimately, one day all organisations working in the Naxal area have been
forced out.

A group that is not open to negotiations and using violence is terrorist.
Are we equipped to fight terrorism?

Apart from working with the people who are equipped to deal with
terrorists, and willing to talk to the civil society, there is no way.

Is there a tested way to link up with people who have power and will talk to
the civil society?

Despite many efforts on this group, I have not seen any suggestions which
would show any build up of a relationship between the civil society and the
police , SPO and Salwa Judum, and no one even considers that the naxals will
talk.

The discussions need to move forward.
That Nendra is failure can only be blamed on the Naxals.

Can the government- and this includes the police, use this opportunity to
provide safety and security to the people - who are left behind in Nendra?
Is it possible for them to use this as an example of how they will support
people to live in their homes?

It seems wasteful to do so much and then simply give it up. Himanhsu ji- do
you see any possibility there?

Can the human rights groups take it up with the police? It ought not to be
difficult to try that?

Nendra human shield volunteers threatened by maoists

 Dear Himanshuji,
One thing is quite clear that we can not expect any positive or human thing from Maoists...they have their own agenda...violence is their path..and they always think that their thinking is supreme...we must condemn these people..they claim that they are fighting for poor but they themselves are problems for tribal and poor...
and perhaps their fear is that may be Himanshuji would erase their base...
