Jairam Ramesh takes on SC over Vedanta

Dear friends

India's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh seems to be consistent in his
stand on the Vedanta issue.

Check this out: http://bit.ly/dCS8XP

While we know that mainstream politics in India is about a lot of
double-speak, this is where we can build synergies and unite for the common cause.

Can we not demand the CEC report in the public domain through RTI?
Calling for ideas. This shameless violation by Vedanta must stop.

Collateral damage

KumKum Dasgupta, Hindustan Times

March 18, 2010

‘I feel safe only when I have friends around me,’ 23-year-old Abhijnan
Sarkar told me when I met him in Calcutta earlier this month.

Abhijnan is a PhD student at the Department of Metallurgical and
Material Engineering in Jadavpur University. To his friends, he is a
promising scholar, editor of a university magazine and a good sport to
argue with on political and social issues over cups of coffee and
cigarettes.

To the government, however, he’s a ‘Maoist sympathiser’.

Salwa Judum - menace or messiah?

Salwa Judum - menace or messiah?

TOI Crest, Mar 20, 2010,

In 2005, when Chhattisgarh decided to arm the tribal population
against Maoists, the Salwa Judum — ‘peace march’ in Gondi dialect —
was born, adding one more complicated twist to the Dickensian saga
unfolding there. It was cheered as a path-breaking , socio-political
move to counter the Red menace. But it would soon make the tribals
even more vulnerable than they were. While the Maoists suspected many
to be Judum sympathisers, lashing out at them with ferocity, the
security forces were content to see them being used as human shields.

Long march to hope
Rajashri Dasgupta, TOI Crest, Mar 20, 2010,

Caught in the crossfire between Maoists and security personnel, Gothi
Koyas, a hill tribe from Chhattisgarh, have been rendered homeless in
their own land. As they migrate in thousands to Andhra Pradesh, Orissa
and Maharashtra, Rajashri Dasgupta writes about the ordeal.
