Hi Georgia...I do the sod thing.  (I only have him use it at night 
when the coyotes are in full force.)  We keep it on the balcony.  At 
Home Depot they sell a large plastic tray that is meant to go under 
a washing machine.  It has a scored circle that you can cut out if 
you want, I did and I position the hole over the gutter.  After he 
uses it, we can water the grass, it helps to keep it from smelling.  
The sod lasts a month this way.  The only problem is it grows long 
after about 2 1/2 weeks and tickles his butt so he won't go in it as 
willingly.  Also, it's a little on the heavy side so my hubby has to 
deal with it. (Not that I mind)  From my experience, if you need to 
keep it inside and can't water it to dilute the pee, it will smell 
bad fast.  The upside is that it's cheap and it might help your dear 
one learn to prefer to go in the grass.
