First, I would have your vet check the leg for a luxating patella -- that's 
basically a kneecap that comes out of place.  It will generally pop back in 
on its own, which is why she can use it periodically, but will pop back out 
again.  If this is the case, the surgery to fix it is very safe and reliable 
but will involve her being laid up for a while b/c it's a fairly large 
incision.

Re food.  Try the California Naturals Reduced Calorie, if you want a lower 
calorie mix.  California Naturals is by Naturapet, the same company that 
makes Innova, another really excellent dry food.  I would say those two are 
the best.  If you aren't specifically going for low calorie, I'd say Innova, 
Innova EVO, or the California Naturals (not particularly the reduced 
calorie).
