I think THAT is when it becomes an issue...people like myself who do not know what they are doing, jumping in and breeding. I wont because I know I can not safely do so. HOWEVER, (lol) Deanna, The piebald and the merle is the same gene...it is just called pi-balds in some breeds and merle in other breeds. If you breed two dogs with the gene, you are doubling up on that gene and taking a chance of causing the blindness/deafness you are refering too. Someone was asking about white dogs the other day and as I said then, white is a color and there are no health issues. Merle is the absence of color...it is a gene that dilutes color and THAT is what can cause health problems. Some people are anti-merle because of this potential. Some are anti-merle because they do not feel that merle is original to the breed, therefore if a chi is a merle it can not be a full-bred chi. I believe that the merle has been a part of the chi for long enough period of time that even if it had once been a cross bred, it has now been bred out to the point that it is a full bred. Just as the long coats were originally a cross breeding. I do believe that anyone who breeds merles needs to have the experience/expertise to do so safely. I do not support someone just jumping in and breeding a merle without a lot of research on the topic and on the line they are breeding to make sure there are no hidden merles, but I do believe there are breeders who do have the know how to safely breed merles. I have a friend in Alaska that specialises in merles and has bred safely for years and years. She has invested a lot of time, effort and money into her merles and back when there was a test available to test for the merle gene, she tested any potential hidden merles. So I would say I feel she can safely breed merles. I know I could not. But, the health issues that concern some anti-merle people are the same issues that could be found in ANY breed that has this color pattern...and people don't try to ban THOSE breeds....
