Okay Sugar you asked. Complex focal seizures like other seizures can be caused
by a number of things. ANYTHING that can cause brain damage can cause a
seizure. It may have been the anesthesia that initiated the seizures. It could
also have been a small stroke if she had any invasive procedure. I can't be
more precise without more info. But that's not what's important. These days
there are so many medication options. The key here is a knowledgeable vet. Good
prognosis for reasonably normal life with the correct meds. Let me know if I
can help. Pam

Pam, you can put your two cents in anytime with me! I am not sure though as
to what you mean about the anesthesia. I felt that it may have been what
caused it, only because it started less then two weeks after her surgeries,
and because I believe that she has been put under several times in her life.
One Vet also felt it was possible, while his associate Vet did not. But then
again, if their wasn't any side effects from anesthesia, then why do they
make you sign papers not to hold them responsible in the event that
something does go wrong using it? They know something, and aren't saying
what the odds are.

The only med that I know of that is used to treat seizures is phenobarbital
and the dog has to stay on it for life, I guess partly because they become
addicted to it.

Any other knowledge that you have on all of this would also be appreciated.

I've been hesitant to chime in but I think I will. I have a lot of 2 cents
to pass around tonight. :)

Gigi's symptoms sound like classic complex focal seizures. Don't mean to be
bossy, just been a nurse for a long, long time.

I think she would would greatly benefit from medication, but she may be
drowsy until she gets used to it.

I don't know the relationship is between anesthesia and complex focal
seizures, but if I were a betting person. That's what it is, and responds
well to treatment.

Hi Peggy

Gigi is in my thoughts and prayers! it almost sounds like she is having very
small seizures.. just not the knock down drag out ones. Makes her confused..
like in outer space, then sleeps. I feel really bad for you and poor Gigi.

I was once married to a guy who had seizures. He had the grand mal ones. He
would yell, fall, shake, etc... then fall asleep right where he was and
snore really loud. I would wake him up and get him to bed. He always looked
so dazed, and out of it when I was walking him to bed. He would sleep the
rest of the day and most of the night. He would tell me when he woke up
after sleeping all day that he remembers nothing.

Poor Gigi is acting strange again all day. She is constantly smelling
everything! Even on my lap, she can't seem to settle down and stop looking
at her back, wiggling a lot because she can't sit still, and then she stops
and just stares at my shirt with that blank look in her eyes again. If I
put her down on the floor she does the same thing with everything in site.
She is really having a hard time of it today. This is so pathetic! Then
after about 5 minutes of this, the only peace she seems to have is when she
falls to sleep, and it does seem to knock her out too.

We had four days without any real episodes and it was so wonderful to see
her tail up and wagging so much, and playing and running. Now it's like it
was before again. It's heartbreaking. I really think that these are those
weird type of seizures that I read about.

I am going to be watching her real close all night and hopefully it will
stop again.

She needs some Paw Prayers my friends....
