When I got Desi at 8 weeks, I took him to the vet right away to make sure that he didnt have any problems. He picked up this little 2 lb 11 oz bundle of fur and said This is a hefty one!. Desi was neutered a week or so before he was 4 months and then the vet told me that I had to put him on adult dog food because he was hanging on to too much fat. Desi was on a diet until about 10 months and then I started feeding him a little more on packed the fat again. Now he is full grown at 9 lbs. and he gets only ½ cup of Royal Canin Chihuahua food broken up into two servings. He is now maintaining a very steady weight. But those dieting months were very hard he was always wanting his food, but I made him wait until meal time then he would gouge the food to get it as fast as he could. I now have to put his food in a little toy which dispenses only a few kibble at a time and he eats slower and also has fun doing it.
It will be hard for a few days, but once he gets adjusted to the smaller portions and the strict feeding schedule he will do fine! Actually the little boy I am picking up will go on one too. Being overweight is very hard on their little frames and has some serious health risks. Not to mention it shortens their lifespan. That being said I feed mine half their allotted amount in the am and half again in the pm. If they seems to be hungry still I might give them a few pieces in the mid-day. I have them that range from 2.85 to 7 pounds and none of mine have had a single problem. Hope this help ease your mind.
