Hi Carol, I think that Dolly must have had a little luxating patella before, only because the orthopedic vet told me that she has a grade one on the other knee, but he didn't want to do it because she might not need surgery on it in her future. I am a little glad of that.her surgery was last March and through this winter she has had some flare-ups. I can tell that she isn't walking right, she just wants to lay on the bed or chair. I got some more anti-inflammatory for her and give it to her for a few days and then she seems fine. She loves to be held and cuddled (and she Is in my arms right now!)
Good luck on Maxx being able to bypass knee surgery.but mostly.the e-collar does not protect the one wearing it from other puppy siblings! Take care of yourself, too! So he was in population with the other Chi's> I think he had bad knees like the vet said to begin with. However, Blue pinned him against the wall and Maxx folded. I think she made the injury worse. She is a strong little girl. Today is his second day on the Steroids and he is acting like a new puppy. He didn't need anything for pain so far. He is stretching his rear leg and the vet said that is a good sing. I am going to try medical message and hydro-therapy prior to surgery. Yesterday I though for sure we were headed to surgery and we still may be, but at least he isn't in pain. I hated that. Thanks for telling me how easy it went. It does make me feel better. I have a 8 year old Amish Puppy mill rescue that have bi-lateral lactating patellas. She was born with it and has learned to walk with it and had no less than a half dozen litters. My vet said the puppies would have all be born with it. Due to the fact that she was not operated on young she has developed muscles that protect her. There will come a day when she may need an appliance to aid her in walking. She has grade 4, I think and there is no real benefit to operate. My regular vet sent us to an orthopedic and she confirmed Ruth Anne would not benefit. So we just baby her. We did have a very large hernia removed from her groin. It was 2 /12 inches long and 3/4 inches wide! This improved her walking. If Maxx needs the surgery I will watch who I let hang with him or he will be missing stitches I am sure! lol Carol and Crew On Fri, Feb 4, 2011 at 8:21 PM, Joan Croft <[email protected]> wrote: I just went back to your original post. When I read it again, I have to ask.do you think that the scuffle started because she hurt Maxx? When I read it, it almost sounded like what happened.something happened and the two of mine were fighting like I had ever seen before. I hope that he doesn't have to have knee surgery L But.it went a lot easier than I had imagined. She came home the same day as her surgery. She still wanted to be a 'big girl' and potty outside. She had a little difficult time going potty with one leg not touching the ground, but seemed to hobble pretty well through the rocks with just three legs. She slept a lot because of the pain meds, but she actually let me do the exercises with her and of course, she got lots of extra kisses and tummy tickles. As I said, I hope that Maxx doesn't need surgery, but the one thing that sticks out that I try to remind others with more than one dog. I kept Desi away from her and if he was sitting by her, he was more or less guarding her. I woke up one morning and one of Dolly's stitches was missing and the incision was really red, so I took her to the vet and she told me that Dolly picked one of the stitches out. I knew that Dolly never had the e-collar off except if I was right there feeding her or changing her dress. Then it hit me.Desi.he was probably trying to do the 'animal thing' and was trying to lick her wound and he tore out the stitch. The next morning another one was missing. I don't know how to avoid this unless no other dog is sleeping in the same bed with the one that had surgery. OK>>>that's all from me! He is back to baring his teeth if you touch him wrong and in hiding. I hate that this has happened and he seems to have taken a step backwards. I just hope he bounces back soon. I heard the most blood-curdling cry and then they both were at war. Dolly started shaking all the time and as me and my neighbor put it almost vibrating. Several trips to the vet before they realized that her knee was injured. She had to go through knee surgery because of it. So, although Maxx's knee might have some previous injury to the knee, the little fight could have put the icing on the cake. The vet feels that Maxx has a patella luxation. It was not the other dogs fault though. Apparently Maxx spent a year (11 months) on cement and he is about a pound overweight and together they can cause hip and knee problems. We had noticed that Maxx has a habit of stretching his rear leg all the time and that is a sign of tendons slipping, or something like that. Anyway when Blue tackled him it just made him strain and thus the pain and inflammation. He is on steroids and once the pain is less we will do an MRI and see what is going on. So he will recover it's just a matter of when. He is looking very pittiful tonight so I gave him a special treat. But as of tomorrow we are going remain faithful to his diet. Unfortunately Maxx is having some pain. It appears he has popped his hip out of the socket! So now it is steroids until his hip can be put back in place. He looks so pitiful I just want to cry. I am so grateful that I printed the commandments that were posted the other day because I was furious at Blue for fighting with him.
