Yes Rose, Miami Dade is a very high kill shelter and I have been networking for those dogs as well as several other Southern states for over a year now. Both methods should be out lawed. Just this past year we had legislation passed for New York that it is illegal to use gas chambers, but the bill did not include heartstick. So many people are now thinking that in order to save money they are probably are using the heartstick, which is suppose to be under investigation to see if that is true or not.
The comment that was passed on the news report ''that it would take twice as long to sedate the animal first'', is so untrue! Many of us have had to put our beloved pets down, and I know when I had to do it, the Vet first gave him a shot that immediately put him to sleep, and the next shot was to pass him onto the Bridge. It was all over within a minute, and with no pain and fear. So I find it hard as to how any one in the field could make such a untrue statement. Personally, I give HBO credit for trying this, but I don't think that they are going to be as successful as they want to be. At least someone is trying. The shelters don't want to make it public. Most people aren't aware their is no law stating that a shelter even has to keep a record as to how many animals are really put down. The shelters only give enough proof in order to keep receiving funds from the towns and states, but they are not the actual figures. It is much worse. Their are so many people out their that have no idea, or even want to know what is really going on. I have heard it so many times from people that they can not bear to even look at Petfinders because it just makes them to depressed and they feel that their is nothing that they can do about. The truth is, as hard as it is for me to do networking for shelters, I just have to keep going. Because once you know that just a simple email saved one dog, it kind of gives you hope that you can do it again and again and again. This may not sound like a lot of dogs, and in reality it is not, but I know for a fact that last year, I managed to get 8 American Eskimos, 2 shih-tzus, 2 senior poodles, 6 chi's, 2 senior poms, 3 yorkies, a german shepherd and a couple of very small mix breeds all pulled from various kill shelters across the states, that rescues were not even aware that the dogs were their until they saw the email. It is a small amount, but it is still over two dozen lives that were saved that would not have been saved other wise. I just wish the numbers were so much higher. This is the way it goes, and I am not the only one who does it. I can't tell you how exhilarating it feels, when you know that you got that one dog pulled! That's what keeps me going. I am not looking for the credit at all, the real credit goes to the people who pull and transporters and the rescues who try so hard to place them. They have the hardest job of all. I am just happy to be a very small part of it all. It takes hours and hours of searching the shelters and reading other networkers emails and then keep forwarding to other rescues and begging for that dogs life. Seeing their pictures with an EU date is the hardest part. Some days I just can't do it. Their are hundreds of us that do this every day, and all of us cry and all of us have days that are just too depressing, usually Tues and Fridays, since that is the two days that most shelters use for EU day. We all keep going, and we need more people to pitch in, because you never know when that one email may save a dogs , and that is what it is all about. Sorry for rambling, guess I needed to vent, tomorrow is Friday again, and I just deleted a couple of list because I already know the outcome. Here is recent articles about the horrible situation here in Miami. I've been to this shelter many times and its always a sad experience to see those animals in cold cement cubicles, and it smells so bad in there. Very overcrowded and they give each dog about 7 days to be adopted then they're killed. There's a lot more going on in there than they will admit. I hope they boot out the Director.
