Oh my gosh, how awful, Beth, about your neighbor's dog and so glad it
survived.  I posted a story a while back about a 20/20 program I saw where a
little boy was playing outside in their woodsy more isolated setting, heard his
dog yelp and turned just in time to see a large bird carrying off his very
small dog (it looked like a CHI) and the whole family was heartbroken. The
mom berated herself up for not protecting the little guy, when, lo and behold,
the next day they heard a scratching at their back door and there was their
precious little dog, a few scratches is all, no deep puncture wounds, and who
knows how far back he had to travel, but somehow he got away and made it back
home and I bet they are extremely careful now about protecting him from all
predators.  And yes, coyotes, I am pretty afraid of them myself. I got chills
when we visited friends in Tucson and I heard them howling during the
night while my husband was snoring away and I
was not able to sleep (vacation translates to exhausted days and dark circles
under eyes for me, lol.)  My friend said small dogs and cats that get lost
often become a meal for coyotes and mountain lions.  While we were visiting in
Tucson, we also contacted our former niece-in-law (darling girl) and met she
and her kids at the mall for a reunion and when I asked how she felt
about coyotes, she waved her hand casually and said they aren't that bad, but
once when she was walking in her neighborhood, she felt a presence and turned
and there were TWO coyotes following her down the street.  She thought they
were harmless, but she is just a tiny little thing and I think they might have
felt with two of them together they could have taken her down.  That's really
scary to me and they have been known to attack people before, not often, but
they have.  Yeah, little Chassis probably wouldn't stand a chance...keep her
safe Mom.

Peggy, about 8 years ago I saw my neighbors Chihuahua get picked up by a hawk,
and then dropped. The Chi was okay, a little shaken up. We also had Owl's too!
One would scope out mine all the time. I was washing my car, and a pigeon was
on the roof above me on the garage and a hawk got it. Heck I don't even trust
the crows! And if it isn't the birds you have to watch out for its the Coyotes
too. My little Chassis is the target, she is under 3 pounds and easy pickings..
