My vet loves Desi…he loves Dolly too. Dolly was their first ever Pet of the
Month. Neither get scared going to the vet, and in the 3 ½ years that I have
been going to that vet, I have only seen one dog put on its brakes to come in
the door. Dolly & Desi would probably rather go nowhere else than the vet’s
office.

Last May when I had that tumor removed from my brain lining, I was a bit
stressed. Desi had been very healthy and I think that the only non-vaccine and
neutering visit was about three weeks before my surgery. First I had taken
both to get some vaccine and the vet noticed that Desi had an infection in his
eye…I thought it was allergies. I just about got him through that and one
morning he would not eat. Now…not sure how many of my posts that you have read
but Desi is obsessed with food. I have had to great lengths just to teach him
how to eat – or should I say chew. I brought him in and the gal at the front
desk was new. She asked me what was wrong with him, I told her that he
wouldn’t eat. She looked at me like I was a moron and then said well why did
you bring him in. I just told her I wanted Dr Bullard to take a look at him.
Dr Bullard is probably the only vet there that would truly understand the
enormity of Desi not eating. So Dr Bullard took him in the back and he told me
that Desi had scrapes on the roof of his mouth, his tongue, and his cheeks. I
suspect that he had been chewing the bottle brush tree bark. So it was
antibiotics for that, and then less than a week before my surgery, Desi kept
trying to chew by his tail. He was on the floor in his bed on my left and with
my peripheral vision I kept seeing him chewing or licking or something. I gave
him some Benadryl and an hour later he was still doing it. I took him in to Dr
Bullard and he said he never saw anything like it, but Desi had a rash in his
butt hole. I had some spray stuff to do on his butt two times a day, but now I
had to bring him to be boarded so that I could have my surgery. First, I had
to send his treat toy – the bob-a-lot because he cannot eat from a bowl; then
he had the eCollar on and I put a little red white and blue bandanna through
the holes and he had a little red white and blue polo shirt on…so cute he was!
Dr Bullard had him – and Dolly too – in a kennel that was by the hospital end
of the building. Dolly’s birthday was the day after my surgery, so they had a
balloon and a cupcake and did a picture of them all holding Dolly & Desi. They
posted it on their website and sent me a link so that I could see that they did
that little birthday party for her.

So since the eye infection, scraped mouth and butt rash, Desi has been healthy,
but I sometimes tease him and tell him that he was making ways that he could go
see Dr Bullard!

Awwwww they don't like mama to leave (but how nice that your vet plays with
them - that helps their time pass). It's great too that they allow boarding -
my place only allows medical cases to be boarded...

I always worry about leaving my doggies for operations, etc...but I work there
- so I can check things out...I always apologize (silly I know) to my dog for
having them go through whatever they've just had to go through. Ask them if
they're mad at me...LOL...but they love us so unconditionally ...

OK…Here I go…I am ready for whatever I get from this! LOL

I take Dolly & Desi to the vet all the time and they still love me! <3 <3 <3

I always get a bit nervous such as when I left Dolly for the hernia surgery…is
she going to be mad at me when I go to get her…but I think all of that meds
inside of her makes her forget that I wasn’t even there.

I worry when I take them to be boarded; but they are very excited when I come
to bring them home. They are very tired then because they get played with day
and night…and I have a sneaky suspicion that my vet goes over to that part of
his clinic and plays with his favorite…my little Desi Lou!

Pam,

You're too funny! Actually, my husband refuses to take him TO the Vet's office
(he doesn't want JJ to associate the pain at the office with Ken bringing him
there), but he WILL pick him up (as in rescuing). Still, not much
encouragement. I'm really looking for the nice weather so we can get some
outside training done (helps with trust as well as releasing pent up winter
energy!) :)

Ok, fess up. Your husband is a closet pincher and pinches him when no one is
looking. lol..That is a tough one. It is definately a trust issue. I have
never experienced that issue but I have read that sometimes it helps to put
your husband into a scenario where he is protecting/rescuing the chi. Like
having him take him to the Vet or put the chi in the car and your husband takes
him somewhere and bring him back. Hmmm, don't kill the messenger if it doesn't
work..

I have the same "crankiness" with JJ, my larger chi. He listens to me, allows
me to do whatever I want (check his ears, clean his nails, give him a bath,
etc), but my husband STILL is not able to give him treats on a daily basis, and
has yet to pet him since my brother passed away. To my husband's credit,he has
done everything...knelt down, offered his hand, offered treats, ignored him...)
yet JJ still does not trust him and we have had JJ since September. We do not
allow any hitting of our animals (and have never even considered it) but what
is the next step? When I was in the hospital to get surgery for colon
cancer,my husband was home alone with both of the dogs. Layla (his little
poochie) his behind JJ until she knew who it was, and then it was fine after he
came home, but JJ was always hiding from him. Ideas anyone? I've even had JJ
connected all day with my husband, and he refuses to look at my husband, goes
along reluctantly, STILL will not eat food from him, and once released races
away. Ideas?

Usually that type of behavior is fear, although they behave like they are
ferocious.lol.. I think they must totally trust in you and know you will
protect them..as Alpha. I take mine to the vet and they know I will protect
them and they have never reacted negativelty. The vet and staff can do anything
to them as long as I hand them over to them and tell them it is ok. Of course
I have had my dogs from puppies so there are no abuse issues in their history
and I have developed this trust. If people come over, they do bark at the
door. But then they are ordered to quiet. If they do not listen, they are
removed to the quiet room. They hate that because they miss all the fun and
they are nosy. After a few minutes, they are let out again. I think they have
to understand that negative behavior has consequences and positive gets
rewards. When they are let out, and are quiet they get treats. Most of the
time they behave.

How did you teach him not to growl at people? My boy won't let anybody get near
him except me. When people come over, he barks his head off and nips at their
heels, but calms down in a little bit. How can I fix that?

When I take him to the vet, I have to open his mouth so the doc can see his
teeth. When I adopted him from the shelter, they said they couldn't exam him
because he was too fierce and wouldn't allow it.

You know, "writing this out loud" makes him sound like a little terror, but
he's not really. He's protecting his property and his mom. But at the same
time, shouldn't he be more calm once people are welcomed inside?

C.

My little one is a little skitzy about people sticking their faces in
hers..Perhaps because he is very tiny and fearful. Sees it as a sign of
aggression. He is fine with me..probably a mix of trust and being alpha but a
little skitzy with others. I have taught him, however, no growling and
aggression with any human, but you can tell he doesn't much like and I warn
people.
