Nice that you have some place to send her (though I am surprised your friend took her instead of him). My neighbor has a male and a female, neither is "fixed" - no money - and when the female is in heat, one of them is in the crate. If that one comes out, the other goes in. No exceptions. (My Rascal and Pepper came from two exceptions, so there are no longer any exceptions....) All three of mine are "fixed".
