As for food there are as many answers as fish in the sea. My experience starts
as a kid whose parents fed grocery store food and whose dogs died by age 8.
Then when I got dogs at 14 yrs old I fed Kennel Ration for a few yrs then
Pedigree when we moved to Fl 4 yrs later. The oldest dogs made it to 11. A dog
with allergies got me into researching food and talking to my vet who raised,
showed and hunted GSPs. He fed Pro Plan so I used it and had excellent
"feedback" from my dogs, both 6lbs and 82-100lbs. I trained and titled all my
dogs so they got lots of exercise. Pro Plan gave them coats people noticed,
good weights and stools that crumbled in 2 days if I didn't scoop. Several of
my friends used it with like results. I fed Pro Plan since 1978 or so and tried
several of the more expensive foods at the recommendation of a Holistic
friends. HoneyB had 2 infected anal glands with the first bag of 2 different
foods and in the 9 yrs I have had her they were her only times she even needed
them cleaned. 3 of my other MinPins also had to be emptied and again those 2
bags were the only times. My little guys do NOT like the new Pro Plan shredded
however so I stick to the reg stuff. Brutus is 15+, just went to the vet last
week and is in excellent health, not even needing a dental. My dogs on Pro Plan
have been 13-16 yrs old when they went to the Bridge. I have been doing rescue
since 1978 and have found the dogs with dirty teeth have had lots of
improvement. Monte needed a dental at first exam 6 weeks ago and now has little
tarter. He refuses any of the dental treats and only eats Pro Plan and canned
food. My dogs get lots of exercise running in the yard, next to my bike, not
the wee ones..lol., doing obed, fetching balls and wrestling plus I have jumps
set up. 82lb Axel is 7yrs old and gets 4cups, Ranger is 20lbs, 3 yrs and gets
1.5cups, Jordan is 5 and 15lbs gets 1.25 cups, Brutus 15 and 6.5lbs gets less
then 1/2 cup as does 11 yrs old 6lb HoneyB. Alice is 10 mos and 4 lbs and gets
1/2 cup, Monte is 4.5lbs, should be 5lbs and 4 yrs and gets 1cup. Canned is not
fed often, more now cuz of Monte and only a teaspoon or 1/2 a teaspoon. I walk
my guys in Florida before 9a.m. for one reason cuz the street and sidewalks get
too hot and so does the air. I have walked for an hour or more at 9p.m. to
2a.m. and have found it impossible to tire out any dog with a walk. The longest
walk we took was 7 miles with the smallest dog being 7lbs, and she wasn't even
tired. Bring water and collapsible bowl. I used to run my 6lb toy Poodle and
6-7lb MinPins next to my bike to condition them for shows. Snub nose Chis like
Pugs wouldn't be able to handle heat but Alice is not as snub nosed as some who
have pug noses.
