Ken,

I have BAofeng UV5r radios and experienced similar problems. After some
research, I decided to try the Nagoya 771 (which was widely promoted by users
and reviewers) and it made a significant difference. I then tried another
highly recommended (and much shorter 7” vs 16”) antenna made by Expert Power
(model SP-669). The EP was even better (but not substantially) than the Nagoya,
and easier to handle with the shorter antenna.

In case you are interested in a remote mike to use with the BF, I also found a
strong recommendation for one specific brand/model (BTech model QHM-22) that
was touted as working better with your BF radio. I just got this mike and can
tell you that I did a few radio tests this weekend and the feedback I got was
that everyone was surprised at the performance and indicated it was quite
acceptable. I think I found a couple of winners to use.

Good luck!

Rich Kramarik

Galen thankyou for the response, would I set squelch in slot one at 15, 2 at 25
then increase each slot by 10 ? Also if I hit the menu button the squelch is
set at 2

1. check the values programmed for squelch, default values tend to be 40 or more

I tend to use lowest value for squelch slot 1 at 15, slot 2 25 ....

2. the mic sensitivity level adjustment by default is set for loud
environments; so talk close to the radio

antenna? tested several, Hyperia 771 was the best

Antenna is the main thing that has to be upgraded on most handheld

My buddy and I just purchased baofeng uv5r radios, we have them programmed
using chirp, we were trying to hit a repeater in the middle of us, about 23
miles total so maybe 11 miles from each of us. Sometimes he could hear me but I
couldn't hear him, then I could hear him and he couldn't hear me, is this an
antenna issue ? We are using the rubber duckies that came with them, I also saw
a setting for repeaters delay on the settings section, it is set to off, does
that need to be changed ? Thankyou ken
