Ken, I have BAofeng UV5r radios and experienced similar problems. After some research, I decided to try the Nagoya 771 (which was widely promoted by users and reviewers) and it made a significant difference. I then tried another highly recommended (and much shorter 7” vs 16”) antenna made by Expert Power (model SP-669). The EP was even better (but not substantially) than the Nagoya, and easier to handle with the shorter antenna.
In case you are interested in a remote mike to use with the BF, I also found a strong recommendation for one specific brand/model (BTech model QHM-22) that was touted as working better with your BF radio. I just got this mike and can tell you that I did a few radio tests this weekend and the feedback I got was that everyone was surprised at the performance and indicated it was quite acceptable. I think I found a couple of winners to use. Good luck! Sometimes he could hear me but I couldn't hear him, then I could hear him and he couldn't hear me, is this an antenna issue ? We are using the rubber duckies that came with them, I also saw a setting for repeaters delay on the settings section, it is set to off, does that need to be changed ?
