I dont like the download bar...

I think that's better rather than redirect you to the download tab. At  
least to the DL window
for FF and Safari.

Some more addition for downloading habit:
- option to close new window if it's only used for downloading
   (and move the download indicator to the current/parent tab)
- option not to show download bar after downloading file
- option to minimize the download bar, similar as the pop-up blocker
   Maybe to the opposite, left side?

And again, please no download window.
It's better to notice the user if there's a download is running and give  
option to cancel, open
the download tab or for a real exit. That way, it (should be) easier to  
remember the last
opened tab rather than making additional cache to save the last-last opened  
tab before left-
over download tab.
