I'm having the same issue Windows XP - Chrome 1.0.154.36 Gears version 0.5.4.2 Google Docs fails to recognize gears. Clicking on the interstitial (upgrade/download now) takes me to gears.google.com gears.google.com recognizes that I have gears installed ... and therefore provides no options. Using the Settings>Options>Under the Hood> "Change Gear Settings" does not help. the docs.google.com site is not listed as an option.
