It appears there's some javascript that gets into an infinite loop when the  
search results
pages is opened in a new tab.  I'm not yet sure how it's happening, but  
I'll keep looking.

The script doesn't get killed when the tab is closed because, in the repro  
steps given,
there's still a google.com tab that's running in the same process.  Killing  
both tabs
(even if it doesn't close down Chrome entirely) will end the process and  
stop the script.
