Also, @46: The only thing we could probably do in that case is what I said  
in comment
20 that Ojan had earlier suggested: give pages a short time (< 100 ms), and  
if they
have not popped up an alert()/prompt()/etc. by then, go ahead and hide them  
and remove
the tab from the tabstrip; restore it if they try and interact with the  
user later in
the unload handler.  This works well for nearly all legit cases, and the  
failure mode
isn't too awful.
