#9: The sounds probably change after the first time you run Sound Preferences because it's starting gnome-settings-daemon, from which GTK apps can load your settings. If it's not running, they'll just use the defaults instead. You could run gnome- settings-daemon when you log in (I think that Xfce has its own XSETTINGS daemon too).
