I no longer observe this behavior. Let me explain: I first noticed this bug when I had Ubuntu 9.04 installed. I was using a font that I downloaded from the internet, that font didn't come preloaded with Ubuntu. I made a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer, and then installed Google Chrome browser developer version. The bug was there, and I was using another font again. A couple of days ago, I switched to Trebuchet MS, which comes with Ubuntu. I don't see this bug anymore, which now I attribute to the font. So, now my font settings for application, document, desktop, and windows title is Trebuchet MS, and I don't observe this bug anymore.
