rm -rf ~/.config/chromium to remove your old profile.

I will state this again, hopefully you'll understand. On Unix machines, a  
program
running as a normal user should not be able to crash GDM/X. For instance, a  
trivial X
program can try to create a X bitmap that's 1 zillion x 1 zillion pixels.  
When that
program makes this request, the X server can (a) fail gracefully or (b)  
crash. If it
does (b), whose fault is that? X servers should not crash in the same way  
Linux
should not let a non-root user reformat the hard drive.

Just because Chromium is the only program you know of that can trigger this  
crash,
doesn't mean you can rule out a X/gdm bug.
