Comment #10 on issue 6459 by fazzios: "Search Google for ..." should open
tab in background
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=6459
I think this issue deserves a little more attention. Consider the following
workflow:
I'm currently reading the wikipedia page for 'dog'. I come across
interesting topics
that link to other wikipedia pages, say 'genetic variability' and 'selective
breeding'. I right click on those links, select 'open link in new tab',
and continue
reading the current page. It's only after I'm done with the 'dog' page
that I'd want
to start exploring a new issue.
Now, consider the analogous workflow of reading a news article about dogs:
While reading the article, I come across a couple terms that I would like
to explore
further. Since it's a news article, there are far fewer internal links.
So I
highlight the interesting terms, rightclick, and select 'search google for
***'.
Essentially, what I've done is to turn the text into a link to the google
search
results page. It only seems natural that it should behave the same way as
the
previous workflow.
I completely understand that sometimes there are design issues that seem a
little
awkward at first, but make sense in the long run. The fact of the matter
is that I
have been using Chrome for ~1 year, and I still have to work around this
functionality (selecting 'search google for ***' and then immediately
returning to
the previous tab) 99 times out of 100. This has also been the case for the
limited
sample size of people whom I've asked about this issue. I imagine they're
are people
who prefer the current behavior, although I have trouble believing that
they're in
the majority.
I'm certainly not asking that you make my preferred behavior the only way
to do
things. I don't even mind if it isn't even the default behavior. I'd just
like
someway to get chrome to accommodate my regular workflow. I personally
think it'd
make sense to have this behavior set in a toggle in the options menu, but
I'd also be
satisfied to have both options in the right click menu('search google for
*** in new
forground tab' and 'search google for *** in new background tab).
