I would like to add a feature to Chrome that would allow parents to require a password in order to create an incognito window.
I have a very simple deal with my kids: Everything they do on the internet is open to my review. The private-browsing feature in Chrome (and other browsers) makes it too easy and too tempting to get around this arrangement. I do not want to tackle the broader issue of parental controls (whether they're good or bad, whether they're censorship, etc.), I just want to add a feature that will allow me to disable private browsing for my kids. To implement this feature, I envision a checkbox in the Chrome options pop-up that would enable/disable password protection of private- browsing mode and a pair of password entry/confirmation text entry fields. If the checkbox is clicked, the password will be required to create the first incognito window/tab. If incognito tabs are already open, the password will not be required again. Un-checking the checkbox will require the entry of the password. I have several questions for the development community: 1. Is someone already implementing this feature or one that is similar? 2. Is there consensus that this would be a good feature to have? 3. How would I go about making this part of the official Chrome build? FYI, I am going to implement this feature for use by my family regardless of what the rest of the world wants. If other people want this capability, I'd like to make it part of Chrome proper (that way I won't have to keep re-implementing it :). If you like the idea and have suggestions, I'd be delighted to hear them. I'm new here, so I apologize if this is a feature that has been discussed. I searched the group for parental control discussions, and I didn't see anything directly related to this idea. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Chromium Discussion mailing list: [email protected] View archives, change email options, or unsubscribe: http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-discuss -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
