Ummm... what do you think the "Open" and "Show in Folder" options are
for when you click on the arrow to the side?  Some people use the
downloads bar not just to check the download status, but also for
quick access to the files once they are downloaded.

There are many ways I would love to see the bar improved -- make it
more like one of the Firefox extensions, for example -- but having
items automatically disappear is NOT one of them.  If I wanted that
kind of behavior, I would use the Galeon browser.

That said, it's apparent that your browsing style and expectations are
different from mine. :)
