WSC in vol IV of WW2 page 742 indicates that German agents had seen a 'thickset man smoking a cigar' boarding the plane at Lisbon. He continues: 'The brutality of the Germans was only matched by the stupidity of their agents. It is difficult to understand how any one could imagine... that I should have booked a passage in an unarmed and unescorted plane from Lisbon and flown home in broad daylight.'
