WSC in vol IV of WW2 page 742 indicates that German agents had seen a 'thickset 
man smoking a cigar' boarding the plane at Lisbon. He continues: 'The brutality 
of the Germans was only matched by the stupidity of their agents. It is 
difficult to understand how any one could imagine... that I should have booked 
a passage in an unarmed and unescorted plane from Lisbon and flown home in 
broad daylight.'

What WSC does not reveal, and neither does the OB, is that Leslie Howard was 
returning from a secret meeting with Franco-on WSC's instruction.
